Born: 31st December 1875 and baptised 28th January 1876 at St Peter’s Church in Liverpool, Lancashire.
Family: He was one of six children born to Thomas and Marion Atkinson (nee Mousley) of West Derby, Liverpool. No marriage can be traced for Charles.
Residence: In 1881 he was living at 13 Derby Lane, West Derby, Liverpool. By 1886 until at least 1891 he was living at Casula, Tarporley Road, Whitchurch, Shropshire with his uncle Henry K Mousley, an officer in the local Rifle Volunteer Battalion; his mother and siblings continued to live in West Derby. In 1901 he was living in a hotel in St Pancras, London.
Employment: Charles attended Whitchurch Grammar School and was employed as a bank clerk when he enlisted.

Charles was registered in the following Freemason Lodges in South Africa which suggests he may have stayed in South Africa after the Boer War or returned there shortly thereafter: Pretoria 2/11/1909 to 30/3/1911, Steynsburg 27/5/1913 to 13/12/1914, and Bulawayo from 16/2/1921
He lived in Southern Rhodesia between 1924 and 1937; his shipping passage records indicate leaving Liverpool on 13 September 1924 and returning there on 21 August 1937. We cannot trace him on the 1939 Register, which suggests he may have returned and died there.
