A MILITARY FAMILY

The position of a well known and highly respected family, that of Mr J. Walker, confectioner, Whitchurch in these exciting times will be read with interest. Two sons H.C. and R.L. Walker have volunteered, and very soon they will have enlisted for South Africa. Mr J.A. Walker, another son, at present engaged as a schoolmaster under the London School Board, has volunteered out of the 1st City Artillery into the City of London Imperial Volunteers. Mr W.E. Walker holds a commission as a captain in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Derbyshire : and Dr A.E. Walker was until recently attached to the Volunteer Medical Corps, Charing Cross, previous to which he was four years with the Bombay Volunteer Artillery Mr Harry Walker has been for sometime an active member of the Whitchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade, has long been considered one of the finest football players in the district, and has represented Whitchurch at hockey. Previous to joining the Yeomanry, he was a member of the Whitchurch Volunteers, and as a shot greatly distinguished himself, having few equals. His brother “Dick” is at present captain of the Whitchurch Alexandra Football Club, and their departure for the front will be felt as a distinct loss to the town. It may be mentioned as an instance of the old saying “like father like son” that Mr J. Walker, a prominent member of Whitchurch Urban District Council was for twenty years a sergeant in the Mansfield Notts Volunteers and a noted shot, and that two of his brothers served about fifteen years in the Robin Hoods and another brother in the Mansfield Company. In bidding farewell adds our correspondent, to two members at least of this illustrious family, we can only express our fervent hope that their fight will be a short and successful one, and that we may be enabled,  at a none too  distant date, to congratulate them upon a safe return.
