WHITCHURCH MEN FOR THE FRONT

The men of the Whitchurch Company of Volunteers who are going to South Africa are:- Privates F. W. Heatley (ambulance), James East, Joseph Prodger, E. Jones, A. Connor, E. Gill, G. Thomas, J.R. Sutcliffe, E. Burrows (son of Sergeant G.P.Burrows, G. Jones, and Atkinson: and those of the Yeomanry:- Corporal T. M. Parker, Sergeant Edwards (veterinary surgeon), Troopers H. Walker, R. Walker, W.O. Nash (Ancient Britain), Joseph Kelly (Liverpool) R. Parker, George Harper, W.G. Burgess, Frank Burgess Copnall (Hanmer), A. Townsend, J. Small, Ernest Wright – On Thursday night the Whitchurch Volunteers and the Yeomanry (including several civilians) who had volunteered were entertained to dinner at the Victoria Hotel. Colonel Lee presided and patriotic speeches were delivered. A touching incident was the fact that the toast of the Army and Navy, was responded to by Captain R. W. Ethelston, whose brother, Commander Ethelston, was the first naval officer killed in the campaign.
