Born: 1869 in Whitchurch, Shropshire.

Family: He was one of nine children born to Peter and Jane Bailey. No marriage can be traced for Alfred.

Residence: In 1871 he was living in Barlow’s Yard, Yardington, Whitchurch; by 1881 the family had moved to 14 Lion Yard, St Oswald, Chester, Cheshire. In 1891 his mother and two brothers were living at 5 Royal Oak Yard, St John, Chester but Alfred was not living with them (we cannot trace him in the 1891 Census). By the time of the 1901 Census he was serving in South Africa.

Employment: He was a labourer when he enlisted
