Other information: William was recalled and served in WW1 and was demobilised on 31 March 1919. William’s brother James also served in the Boer War.

Born: In 1878 in Bronington, Flintshire, Wales and baptised 18 August the same year in Bronington Parish Church. Other records suggest a birth year of 1876

Family: He was the eldest of seventeen children born to William Downward, a labourer, and his wife Emma. He married Hannah Millner, from Wrexham, in 1910.

Residence: In 1881 he was living with his family in Checkoe Road, Bronington. By 1891 the family had moved to Acton Terrace, Rhosnessni, Wrexham, Denbighshire but William was not with them. In 1901 he was serving in South Africa.

Employment: He was a farm labourer when he enlisted.

Death: Most probably 1935, in Wrexham, age 59.
