Born: In 1879 in Whitchurch, Shropshire. Birth registered as Thomas Ernest Gill.

Family: His grandparents were Henry and Frances Gill, with whom he lived. Henry and Frances had eight children and the census records suggest one of them was Ernest’s parent. His service records indicate his next of kin as his grandmother Sarah Annie Gill of 2 Arrowsmith Yard, Whitchurch; our research cannot trace this lady. He married Mary Ellen Cliffe in 1902; no children can be confirmed for the marriage.

Residence: In 1881 he was living with his grandparents in Green End, Whitchurch; in 1891 their address was 2 Railway Inn Yard, Green End (which may have been the same residence). In 1901 he was serving in South Africa.

Employment: He was a labourer when he enlisted.

Death: In 1938, aged 59, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
