Born: December 30th 1882 in Camberwell, Surrey. Possibly baptised February 1887 at St Philip the Apostle in Camberwell.
Family: He was one of two children born to Richard George and Sarah Jane Harper (nee Thame). Our research cannot conclusively identify if George married.
Residence: In 1891 he was living at The White Lion Hotel, Green End, Whitchurch, Shropshire with his uncle and aunt, Thomas King and Elizabeth Monk. (His uncle was the publican). Whitchurch Free Grammar School records his admittance on 1 May 1895. By 1901 he was serving in South Africa.
Employment: He was an ironmonger when he enlisted, being apprenticed to W H Smith Ltd, Ironmongers, Whitchurch for 4 years.
