Born:  In 1872 in West Derby, Liverpool

Family: He was the youngest of six children born to John Kelly, a building contractor, and his wife Alice (she died in 1878). John married Emily Wakefield in 1880 and they had four surviving children, Joseph’s step siblings. No marriage can be confirmed for Joseph.

Residence:  In 1881 he was living with his father and siblings at Bistree House, Mold, Flintshire. In January 1900 he gave his father’s address as 3 Victoria Park, Wavertree, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Employment:   He gave no occupation when he enlisted in 1900

Death: Not known

Other information: Joseph’s link to Whitchurch is not clear. We do know that he enlisted in Shrewsbury on the same day as Frank Burgess and Stephen Copnall (both from Whitchurch) who had consecutive service numbers.
