Born: According to his attestation papers John was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire 1870. Neither birth nor baptism could be traced.
Family: Parents not traced. He had a brother Harry who was also in the army and signed up at the same time. John’s wife Ellen Elizabeth died in India in 1903, the date of their marriage could not be traced.
Residence: He joined the army in Bury, Lancashire in June 1892. In 1904 John was discharged to the home of Mr Dorber at 50 Rudman Street, Salford, Manchester. However he was no longer with the family in 1911.
Employment: John’s occupation when he joined the military was that of clerk
Death: Army records indicate John died 20 October 1904 at Sialkot, India. However this is more likely to have been the date he was first declared insane – see discharge below. Date of death is unknown.
Other information:
Was invalided home to England from 15 Nov 1904 until his discharge in January 1905 from Netley, Hampshire.
