Born: 27 March 1866 in Whitchurch, Shropshire and baptised 13 April the same year in St. Alkmund’s Parish Church. His surname was also spelled Mathews

Family: He was one of five brothers born to John and Mary Matthews (nee Johnson). He married Emily Jones in 1896; no children can be identified for the marriage.

Residence: In 1871 he lived with his parents and brothers in Grindley Brook, Whitchurch; by 1881 they had moved to Dodington, Whitchurch. In 1891 and 1901 he was serving with the military.

Employment: He was a labourer when he enlisted.

Death: 1952 aged 85 and buried 22 January same year in Whitchurch Cemetery
