Born: 17 September 1879 in Whitchurch, Shropshire and baptised on 19 October the same year in St. Alkmund’s parish Church, Whitchurch.
Family: He was one of two children born to William and Ellen Mayer. He also had a half sister. He married Ada Marshall in 1911 and together they had two children.
Residence: In 1881 and 1891 he was living at The Red Cow (public house), Pepper Street, Whitchurch. When he was discharged from the military he stayed in South Africa, joining the Cape Mounted Police.
Employment: Admitted to Whitchurch Grammar School in January 1894. Alfred was a butcher when he enlisted.
Death: 9 May 1963 in The General Hospital, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. He was aged 84
