Born: 28 May 1858 in Whitchurch, Shropshire and baptised on 21st June the same year in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Whitchurch.

Family: He was one of seven children born to Joseph and Eliza Middleton. No marriage can be confirmed for Alfred.

Residence: In 1861 he was living with his parents and siblings in Bargate, Whitchurch; by 1871 they had moved to Cartwright Street, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. In 1891 he was living with his sister and brother in law and their family in Hill Street, Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire

Employment: He was a iron worker when he enlisted

Death: In February 1937 in London Road Hospital, Stoke upon Trent, aged 78.

Other information: By 1911 Alfred had returned to England
