Family: He was one of ten children born to Joseph and Sarah Oakley (nee Humphreys). No marriage can be identified for Robert

Residence: In 1881 he was living in Fauls, Prees with his parents and siblings; in 1891 he was lodging at 19 Sandon Street, Crewe, Cheshire. In 1901, after his return from the Boer War, he was living at 94 Bedford Street, Crewe with his parents and siblings.

Employment: He was a builder when he enlisted. Further information suggests he may have been a bricklayer for the London & North Western Railway in 1898.
