Born: 26 April 1878 in Weymouth, Dorset and baptised 25 July the same year in Holy Trinity, Weymouth.
Family: He was one of seven children born to The Rev James and Mary Smith Payton. He married Lucy A McCabe in Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire in 1916 and together they had two children.
Residence: At the time of his baptism, the family were living in Weymouth; by 1881 they had moved to Old Chapel Inn, Harborne, Kings Norton, Warwickshire and were living with George’s maternal grandparents. In 1891 the family were living at Hopton Rectory, Hopton Village, Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire.
Employment: He was a bank clerk when he enlisted at Shrewsbury
Death: 3 February 1952 at The Cottage Hospital, Kington, Herefordshire, aged 74
Other information: George’s maternal grandfather Edward Addenbrooke was vicar of St. Chad’s Parish Church, Prees from 1883 until his death in 1897 and his uncle James Jennings Addenbrooke was vicar of Whixall. This provides a family link to the Whitchurch area.
