Other information: Hugh served in India between 1904 and 1911. He settled in Kenya and enlisted at the beginning of WW1; more information can be found on our Great War site. Hugh is commemorated on the war memorials at Malpas Cheshire, Eton College, Christchurch College Oxford and the Muthaiga Club Kenya.
Born: 18 March 1878 in Whitchurch, Shropshire and baptised on 24 April the same year in St. Alkmund’s Parish Church, Whitchurch.
Family: He was the second of eight children born to Samuel Henry Sandbach, a retired barrister and JP, and his wife Elizabeth. Sadly his two brothers died in childhood and two of his sisters predeceased him. No marriage can be traced for Hugh.
Residence: At the time of his baptism and in 1881 he was living with his parents at Terrick Hall, Whitchurch. By 1900 the family had moved to Cherry Hill, Malpas, Cheshire.
Employment: Hugh attended Eton College, going up to Christchurch College, Oxford in 1897. He was at Oxford when he enlisted
Death: Killed in action on 4 November 1914 in Tanzania and buried in Dar Es Salaam War cemetery.
