Other information: John served in India after the Boer War. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers in 1915 and served with the British Expeditionary Force during WW1 – more information can be found on our Great War site.
Born: 27th December 1875 in Halifax, Yorkshire.
Family: He was one of three children born to William and Emma Shackleton (nee Clay). He married Annie Grice 4th January 1913 in Whitchurch, Shropshire and lived there for the rest of his life. The couple had two children.
Residence: In 1881 his family were living at 19 Gray Street, Northowram, Halifax. Ten years later they had moved to Shropshire and their address was 17 Spring Cottages, Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury. In 1911 John was lodging at 34 Bargates, Whitchurch.
Employment: He was a gas labourer when he enlisted.
Death: In 1947 at the Public Assistance Institution, Whitchurch, aged 72. He was buried 28 May the same year in Whitchurch cemetery.
