Residence: In 1871 he was living at The Lodge, Weston Rhyn, Shropshire with his mother and siblings; in 1881 he was a servant at Alkington Farm, Whitchurch. In 1891 he was serving in India with the military and in 1901 was in South Africa.
Employment: He was a farm labourer when he enlisted in 1888
