Born: In 1871 in Whitchurch, Shropshire and baptised 3 September 1871 in St. Alkmund’s Parish Church, Whitchurch.
Family: He was one of two sons born to George and Eliza Speak (nee Henshall). He married Mary Ann Farr in 1904; no children can be traced for the marriage.
Residence: At the time of his baptism the family were living in Green End, Whitchurch; by 1881 he was living at 3 Yardington, Whitchurch with his grandmother, mother and brother. At the time of the 1891 census John was serving in the army. In 1901 he was listed at 5 Yardington, Whitchurch staying with his mother and brother whilst on furlough from the army.
Employment: He was a labourer when he enlisted in 1889.
Death: In 1910 in Whitchurch, aged 39, and buried 25 July the same year in Whitchurch cemetery.
