Family: He was one of four children born to Matthew and Margaret Spence (nee Atherton). He married Kate Blanche Threadkell (nee Storr) in 1901 in Kensington, London. Kate had two children from her first marriage; no children can be found from her marriage to James
Residence: At the time of his baptism, the family were living in Wirswall, Whitchurch and they continued to live there until at least 1881. By 1891 they had moved to Byrkeley Lodge Stables, Tutbury, Staffordshire where the family continued to live until at least 1911.
Employment: He was an officer’s servant when he enlisted.
Death: 21 January 1953 in Westminster, London
