Born: In 1880 in Stokesay, Shropshire and baptised on 6 June 1880 in Stokesay Parish Church.
Family: He was one of six children born to Edwin and Annie E Thomas. No marriage can be traced for George.
Residence: At the time of his baptism his parents were living in Newton, Shropshire. By 1881, they were living in Richards Castle, Ludlow, Shropshire and in 1891 they had moved to Newport Street, Clun, Shropshire. At the time of George’s attestation in 1900, his father was steward of the Working Men’s Club in Whitchurch. In 1901, having just been discharged from the military, George was boarding in Scotland Street, Ellesmere, Shropshire.
Employment: He was a porter when he enlisted; the 1901 Census shows him as a police constable.
