Other information: William had previously served in the Mediterranean, Egypt and Burma (Myanmar).

Born: In 1865 in Whitchurch, Shropshire.

Family: He was one of three children born to Thomas and Sarah Whitfield. He married Emily Thorne in 1897 in Tunbridge Wells and together they had six children.

Residence: In 1871 he was living in Dodington Street, Whitchurch with his parents and siblings; by 1881 they had moved to 1 Rosemary Lane, Whitchurch. In 1901, Emily, his wife was living with their first two children in Higham Lane, Hadlow, Kent whilst William was serving in South Africa.

Employment: He was a labourer when he enlisted.

Death: In 1946 in Tonbridge, Kent aged 81.
