Lancers (5th Royal Irish)

The whole regiment deployed to the Boer War (1899-1902) in 1899, where its 'C' Squadron took part in the charge at Elandslaagte (1899) and helped relieve Ladysmith (1900). During the second phase of the war the 5th Lancers were mainly in the Eastern Transvaal and they took part in the sweep into the Vryheid district. King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment

In December 1899 the second battalion embarked for the war in South Africa. They fought at Spion Kop, the Relief of Ladysmith and during the later guerilla phase of the conflict. The 3rd and 4th Militia Battalions also served in South Africa along with two and a half companies of Volunteers. In all, over 3,500 officers and men of the regiment served in the Boer War.
